About Me

I am a Thornhill-based visual artist who draws inspiration from my passion for music, modern dance, and poetry. I named my gallery “Improvisations & Explorations” to reflect my approach to dance, creating my own choreography as I go, moving along freely to the music, just as my brushes and tools move freely across the canvas. My approach to art is intuitive, experimental, and ever-evolving.

I begin with a feeling and my paintings come alive on their own. I embrace the mystery and the surprises that emerge on my canvas. I breathe in freedom and paint the flow. Each painting tells a story of my ideas, emotions, and experiences.

“13 Brushes in the Sink”

I love experimenting with a variety of tools and mediums to discover innovative ways to create texture and depth. Some of my favourite artmaking tools besides my brushes are putty scrapers, spatulas, and sponges. My paintings are built on layers upon layers, changing designs, colours, and shapes. I love exploring new mediums — I am experimenting with acrylic ink and how it blends with acrylic paint.

I ask myself, “What will I leave hidden and what do I want revealed?” If I am not happy with a painting, I cover the art with a thick layer of Gesso. I love the feel of the thick Gesso as I apply it on my canvas. Cleaning my brushes, my tools and the splashes on my floor in my home studio are also part of my process.

I am in awe of how my paintings are transformed from one to another. I will often show a painting to my friends and family and the next day it is gone as I have painted more layers of colour over it — and sometimes, a painting I covered over will come back on a different canvas.

I am passionate about my work — painting for me is natural process and flows freely from within. There is a conversation I have with my work: “What do I love and what do I want to change?”

when do i know a painting is finished?

I love to work in a series sharing the paint from one canvas to another. The painting rests on my easel for days, or weeks. I love to walk by, take quick glances at the art, and notice anything I want to keep or change.

When I feel truly happy and I don’t want to do anything more, I sprinkle sparkle varnish and watch my painting glow. I love how the painting catches the morning light, creating sparkles on my art.

Days later I love to run my hands over the canvas feeling and touching the textures on each new work. For me, painting is storytelling.
